FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General FAQs

What are the key factors that affect the solar power generation?

Following factors affect the plant performance significantly:

  • Irradiation level at the location of the project
  • Project design
  • Equipment quality

Once the asset is developed, Asset Management plays a key part in ensuring optimum generation

What factors should I consider when planning for a solar power project?

If you are looking go solar, here are some of the questions that you should try to answer to identify the best solution for you:

  • What are your energy demands?
  • What is your monthly energy bill?
  • How much would be your savings and which solution (Off-Site, On-Site, or Hybrid Soar) will give you maximum savings?
  • According to your business plan, which model (CAPEX or OPEX) suits you the best?
  • In case of on-site solar, what is the available shadow-free area in your premises?
I have time-bound Net-Zero target, how can solar power help me meet my targets?

Based on your plant load, consumption pattern, energy consumption, location of your facility, and available area in your premises, you can choose to procure power from the following set of solutions: large scale an off-site solar project, on-site solar project, Hybrid solar with storage, and energy trading.

Does a solar project make financial sense for me?

Absolutely! The cost of solar energy across all Indian states is significantly lower than the cost of energy procured from the grid. By choosing to go Solar, you can save significantly on your energy bills.

Off-site Solar (Open Access)

What are the various Open Access charges?

Each state has different regulations for Open access projects. Hence, charges for such projects vary with its location and procurement model. However, most states do have favourable policies for open access and have generally exempted Open Access projects from many of these charges.

Various charges under the Open Access mechanism include:

Transmission charges - Charges are payable to the transmission company for using the transmission infrastructure.

Wheeling charges - Charges are payable to the distribution company for using the infrastructure.

Transmission losses and Wheeling losses- These are the electricity losses incurred during the transmission and distribution of power.

Cross-subsidy surcharge (CSS) - These are payable by commercial and industrial buyers to fund the tariff subsidy for agricultural and residential buyers.

Additional surcharge (AS)

Banking charges

Which power procurement models can be used in Open Access?

The important models are:

  • Captive
  • Group Captive
  • Third Party PPA:
What do you mean by Open Access Power?

Open access power is a regulatory mechanism that allows a grid-connected bulk consumer with a connected load of 1MW or above to meet a part of or their entire electricity requirements via alternate energy sources.

On-Site Solar (Rooftop, Ground Mount and Carports)

Will the installation of the solar power plant damage my roof?

No, there will be no damage done to your roof. Furthermore, we work with both penetrative as well as non-penetrative structures based on the clients need.

What happens to the excess power generation from my solar power plant?

In case the state in which your plant is located has a favourable net-metering policy, the access power generated from your plant can be sold back to the grid.

How much time does it take to install an on-site solar power plant?

Installation time depends on the scale and complexity of the project. The time required for Project execution can range between 2 months to 6 months.

I’m not sure if the roof of my plant is strong enough to hold a solar power plant. What can be done?

Before installation of a solar power project, SunSource Energy conducts tests to evaluate the strength of the roof and its capability to hold the project. Based on which, we provide recommendations and solutions to allow you to efficiently use solar power.

How much area is required to install a rooftop solar project

Area required for an off-site solar project depends on multiple factors, such as: Location of the project, Wattage of Modules, and Design and engineering, among various others. However, a rough estimate is that for a 1 MW on-site solar plant, one needs ~10,000 sqm shade-free roof area.

Asset Management

Who will look after the system after commissioning?

SunSource Energy ensures complete management of the asset during the term of the PPA.

How do I know the project will be handled safely and smoothly?

You can track the performance of the project in real-time using our NOC portal.

How can I see how my system is performing?

You can monitor the performance of your project in real-time on a mobile app. We use cutting edge technology to monitor the performance of our projects which helps us in predictive maintenance of our assets and allows us to fix anomalies – if any- in the least possible time.

Is there an annual maintenance fees for the projects during the PPA Tenure?

There are no fees for projects for which our clients have signed a PPA with us. We also do offer our asset management services on standalone basis, for which we charge a nominal fee. A Solar project has no moving parts, and therefore requires little maintenance, which includes module cleaning every 2-4 weeks and preventive electrical maintenance every 3 months.

Round-the-Clock Power (Hybrid Solutions: Offsite and On-Site Solar, Energy Storage, Energy Trading)

What are the advantages of using Solar+Battery Storage Hybrid?

Solar projects with BESS allow you to use firm clean power even during the evening hours when the solar power project doesn’t produce electricity. This is especially useful at locations where along with the power from grid, you have reliance on diesel based power to ensure the continuity of the business.

What are the available options to maximise my clean energy procurement?

Based on your plant load, consumption pattern, energy consumption, location of your facility, and available area in your premises, you can choose to procure power from the following set of solutions: large scale an off-site solar project, on-site solar project, Hybrid solar with storage, and energy trading.

Finance

When can I expect to start saving from my Solar Power Project?

Solar Power is cheaper than the power you currently procure from the grid. Hence, you can expect savings from the Day one.

What is the investment I need to put in when planning to go Solar?

For an On-Site Solar project, you don’t need to invest anything to get a solar project installed at your premises. Whereas, for a group-captive off-site solar project, you’d need hold atleast 26% equity in the project.
